50th Anniversary Tamworth Country Music Festival
50th Anniversary Tamworth Country Music Festival
I’m sure you know that Tamworth in regional NSW is heralded as Australia’s Country Music Capital. And I’m sure you’ve heard about its annual Country Music Festival. So, does it live up to its name? Does the city and its 10-day festival in January really offer that little bit of Nashville in New South Wales?
Well, we’re here to say yes! It absolutely does!
Whether you live in Inverell, Mudgee, Sydney or even Tamworth itself, it’s time to get on board! It’s time to fully immerse yourself into the festival and give in to Australia’s country music capital. We say put on that Akubra, grab the RM Williams and enjoy it, because there really is no better time to experience it for yourself. And what a better year to do it than in 2022, with the festival celebrating its 50th birthday.
Known more as an experience, than just a festival, this 100% authentic event is one for music lovers of all genres. And the best part is, it’s literally right on our very own doorstep in regional NSW. This 10-day event sees hundreds of artists performing across several venues, bringing hundreds of thousands of visitors to the city.
A cornerstone summer celebration and truly unique event, the Toyota Country Music Festival, Tamworth is the largest music festival in Australia, the largest country music festival in the southern hemisphere AND among the top 10 festivals in the world.
Whole-heartedly living up to its name as ‘Australia’s Country Music Capital’ this festival completely envelopes Tamworth and the wider region in its authentic country roots offering an eclectic mix of talents and experiences. Launching the careers of some of Australia’s biggest country music stars like, Keith Urban, Troy Cassar-Daley, Kasey Chambers, Beccy Cole and Lee Kernaghan, the festival’s 50th birthday bash will offer all the genres you’d expect, including traditional, Americana, blues, roots, Alt-country, bluegrass, honky-tonk. And some of those big names who kicked off their careers in Tamworth, will return to where it all began in 2022, with ARIA Hall of Fame inductee, Kasey Chambers, country music luminary Troy Cassar-Daley and admired performer Fanny Lumsden already named in next year’s line up. Multi-award-winning artists Adam Brand and Travis Collins will also headline a string of FREE concerts in Toyota Park, the biggest venue in the city.
In a nod to five decades of the Festival, the 50th anniversary will be celebrated in spectacular style with a concert featuring an all-star line-up held at the Tamworth Regional Entertainment Conference Centre on Wednesday, 19 January 2022.
The 50th Anniversary Concert will be a musical journey documenting the past half-century of country music in Australia and includes some of the country’s most revered artists like John Williamson, Graeme Connors, Sara Storer, Adam Harvey, Felicity Urquhart, James Blundell, and Gina Jeffreys. Together with Australian country music fan favourites, Travis Collins, Fanny Lumsden, Shane Nicholson, and Amber Lawrence. The event will showcase the festivals evolution from its modest beginnings in 1973 into the biggest Festival in Australia today with rare video footage of the pioneers of Australian country music.
The festival also hosts country music’s night of nights, the Golden Guitar Awards. It’s where stars strut the red carpet and appear on stage as presenters, performers, or join the ranks as a Golden Guitar winner. The Golden Guitar Awards is the nation’s longest running music awards and the pinnacle event of the Toyota Country Music Festival, Tamworth each year.
But it’s not just country music that this festival is known for. There is so much more. It’s the atmosphere, the vibe, the feel - there really is nothing quite like Tamworth at festival time. The city’s main thoroughfare, Peel Street, is turned over to pedestrians, there’s street art, street performers and market stalls. Hundreds of buskers, line the footpaths to battle it out in the busking comp, and there’s plenty of opportunities to be up close and personal with performers in a dynamic Fanzone precinct. There’s a dedicated food zone allowing festival goers to sample all kinds of cuisines and there is a country show inspired family zone, with carnival rides, show bags and games. And at night the festival truly comes alive with artists performing in multiple venues across the city. Making it an unforgettable live music experience.
Be sure to check out the ABCRA Rodeo Round Up during the festival too! A two day showcase event with competitors from all over the country flocking to Tamworth to compete for the Golden Guitar prize. Whether you are a music fan or not, Tamworth in January is a must.
